Versailles guided tour or on your own

Both work. A guided tour explains the rooms and the royal story in about 90 minutes. On your own, you need a timed Passport ticket.

Every palace visitor needs a timed slot. Only online buyers are sure to get in within 30 minutes of their slot.

The palace is busiest on Tuesdays and weekends in high season. It advises arriving at the 9 am opening.

The Hall of Mirrors

Four tours here name the Hall of Mirrors in their listings. The guided palace tours take in the State Apartments as well.

Who goes free

Under-18s and EEA residents under 26 go free, but they must still book a slot online. Everyone goes free on the first Sunday from November to March.

Official tickets cannot be refunded. Paris Museum Pass holders still need a free Passport ticket with a slot.

A Versailles day tour from Paris

Plan a full day. The palace suggests this order: the palace at 9 am, then the gardens and park from 10 am to noon. Then the Trianon from noon to 4:30 pm.

From 1 April to 1 November the palace opens 9 am to 6:30 pm, with last entry at 5:45 pm. From 2 November to 31 March it closes at 5:30 pm, with last entry at 4:45 pm.

The gardens are open every day. The palace and the Trianon are closed on Mondays, 25 December, 1 January and 1 May.

Musical Fountains shows run from early April to late October, at €15. In the low season the gardens are free.

Versailles bike tour

The bike tour takes 7.5 hours with a local guide. It includes timed palace entry, the Petit Trianon and Marie Antoinette's Domaine. Lunch from the market is not included.

Giverny and Versailles in one day

The 11.5-hour coach day adds Monet's home and gardens at Giverny. In 2026 the house and gardens were open from 1 April to 1 November; they are closed in winter.

Getting to Versailles from Paris

Versailles is easy to reach by train or bus. The €2.55 Métro-Train-RER ticket covers the whole trip, as the official fare pages list it.

Our Paris to Versailles train guide has the full steps.

Getting to Versailles by train

Take the RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, about a 10-minute walk from the palace.

Trains from Montparnasse (lines N or U) go to Versailles Chantiers, about an 18-minute walk. Trains from Saint-Lazare go to Versailles Rive Droite, about a 17-minute walk.

Bus 171 runs from Pont de Sèvres in about 30 minutes.

More day trips

Versailles is the closest day out. Fontainebleau, another château, is at the end of this page, and a Paris to London day trip is another option.

Booking tips for Versailles

  1. Go early, avoid Mondays

Book a 9 am slot if you can. The palace is closed on Mondays and busiest on Tuesdays and weekends.

  2. Know what you can cancel

Six of these eight offer free cancellation. The 4-hour tour, the audio-app ticket and official tickets cannot be refunded.

  3. Find your meeting point

Most tours meet in Versailles itself, near the palace. You get there on your own by train. The Giverny day leaves from Place du Général Kœnig in Paris.

  4. Wear good shoes

The gardens are big and most of a day is on foot. Most listings say the tours do not suit people with mobility issues.

  5. Leave big bags at home

Oversized bags and luggage are not allowed in the palace.
