Paris to Reims: train, car or tour

Take the TGV. It runs from Paris Gare de l’Est to Reims in about 45 minutes. From CDG airport, a TGV takes about 30 minutes.

Reims has two stations. Reims-Centre is in town. Champagne-Ardenne TGV is in Bezannes, with a tram into town. The two Reims tours meet at the central station.

By car, Reims is about 1 h 30 from Paris on the A4. Rather not take the train or drive? One tour leaves from Paris.

Things to do in Reims

Start with Reims Cathedral, where 33 French kings were crowned. The Saint-Remi Basilica is on the UNESCO list too.

Then visit a champagne house. Houses in Reims that welcome visitors include Veuve Clicquot, Pommery and Ruinart.

Most houses require you to book tours ahead. This matters most at weekends, on holidays and in summer.

The Champagne region: Reims or Épernay

Pick one town if you have only one day. The tourist office says both in a day is possible but brief.

Épernay is about 1 h 20 from Gare de l’Est by train, and 30 minutes from Reims. Its Avenue de Champagne has Moët & Chandon, Mercier and Perrier-Jouët. Épernay has about 110 km of cellars.

Moët & Chandon tours cost €48, €65 or €85 on its official site. Each takes about 1 h 30.

The hills, houses and cellars of Champagne are on the UNESCO list.

Tastings and the drinking age

Tastings are for adults. The French government says alcohol may not be sold or given to anyone under 18. Sellers may ask for proof of age.

Veuve Clicquot’s site asks visitors to be of legal drinking age, or 21 if their country has none. One Reims tour does not suit children under 12.

Booking tips for a Champagne day

  1. Book the cellars ahead

Most champagne houses require booking, above all at weekends, on holidays and in summer.

  2. Check your Reims station

Reims-Centre is in town, where the two Reims tours meet. Champagne-Ardenne TGV is out of town, with a tram in.

  3. Bring ID

Sellers may ask for proof of age at tastings. Under-18s cannot be served.

  4. Mind the age limits

The family-run wineries tour does not suit children under 12.

  5. Check the day before

Big sights can close at short notice for strikes or ceremonies. Check the official site the day before.
