Normandy in a day?

Yes, but it is a long day. Guided tours from Paris take 12 to 14 hours.

By train, the beaches are almost 3 hours from Paris each way. A tour does the driving and plans the stops for you.

Where Normandy is and how long it takes

2 h
Paris to Caen by train
246 km
Paris to Caen by motorway
2 h 18
Paris to Bayeux by train

Normandy is northwest of Paris. Caen is about 2 hours away by train and 246 km by motorway. That is about 150 miles.

Trains to Normandy leave from Paris Saint-Lazare. Bayeux, near the beaches, is about 2 h 18 by direct train.

Omaha Beach lies about 20 km northwest of Bayeux.

Guided tour, train plus local tour, or rental car

A guided tour is the simplest way. It costs from €105, and the coach does all the driving.

The train is cheaper but slower to reach the beaches. Trains to Bayeux start from €16, then local buses go to the beaches.

A rental car gives you the most freedom, as the beaches are spread out. But driving there and back in one day is long and tiring.

What a D-Day tour visits: Omaha Beach, the cemetery, the museums

Every pick visits a D-Day beach, and most stop at Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery above it. Many add Pointe du Hoc, Utah Beach or Arromanches.

The Normandy American Cemetery is free and open daily, 9 am to 5 pm, ABMC says. ABMC is the US agency that runs it. It holds 9,389 burials, and a flag ceremony takes place one hour before it closes.

The path from the cemetery down to Omaha Beach has been closed since 2016. Public beach access is nearby.

The Overlord Museum is about 500 m from the cemetery, says the regional visitor guide.

No registration is needed yet; the cemetery plans one for visits from summer 2027.

Small group, minibus or large coach

Group size is not stated on most of these listings. If it matters to you, ask before you book.

Three picks travel by minibus: the landing beaches tour, the Canadian Juno Beach tour and the private or small-group tour. Two travel by coach, and one listing does not say.

Only one listing, the minibus tour with a pickup option, offers private or small groups in writing.

Train and local tour, step by step

Yes, you can reach the D-Day beaches by train and bus. A direct train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Bayeux takes about 2 h 18, from €16 per person.

Our Train to Normandy from Paris guide goes through the trains in detail.

  • Walk 14 minutes from Bayeux station to the town centre.
  • Take a NOMAD bus from Bayeux: lines 120, 121 and 114 go to Omaha, Gold and Juno beaches. Buses are few, so check the timetable first.
  • The bus to Arromanches takes about 30 minutes.

Mont-Saint-Michel and D-Day together

Want both? The D-Day landmarks and Mont-Saint-Michel tour covers Omaha Beach and the Mont in 15 hours, from €199.

What to know before you go

Plan for a very long day: 12 to 14 hours. Wear comfortable shoes for the beach and the cemetery paths.

Check what is included on your card. Three tours include lunch. Museum entry varies: some include the Utah Beach Museum, one the Overlord Museum.

Most of these tours say they do not suit wheelchair users or people with mobility issues.

Booking tips for a D-Day tour

  1. Find the meeting point

  3. No registration yet

You don’t need to register for the American Cemetery yet. It plans registration for visits from summer 2027.

  4. Cemetery hours

The cemetery is open 9 am to 5 pm. It closes on 25 December and 1 January.

  5. Check the day before

Big sights can close at short notice for strikes or ceremonies. Check the official site the day before.
