Walking, guided and private tours

A walking tour is the cheapest way to have a guide. Our walks cost from €15 to €30 and take one and a half to three hours.

Inside museums and monuments, the rules are stricter. In France, only guides with the official guide-conférencier card may lead paid group visits there for tour firms.

Every card on this page shows the rating and the number of reviews. Use them to judge the guide before you book.

Paris private tours: what you pay for

A private tour means only your group, and often a pickup. The Traction Avant or DS tour costs from €146 for a group of up to 4, with hotel pickup and drop-off.

The 2CV night ride is also private, with pickup included. It is priced per person, from €70.

Choose and book: cemetery, night and Marais tours

The quieter tours are some of the best in Paris. Père Lachaise, the night walks and the Marais take you away from the big crowds.

Père Lachaise cemetery tours

Père Lachaise is the most famous cemetery in Paris. All three of our cemetery walks visit the graves of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Edith Piaf.

The 3-hour tour is the longest and best rated. Its listing names French as the language. The 2-hour famous-graves walk runs in English. The haunted tour adds ghost stories.

Paris at night: night tours and the vintage car

Paris by night is best seen on a ghost walk or from a vintage car. The ghost walk is two hours on foot, in English, from €30.

The 2CV ride is one hour, private, with pickup. Its roof closes if it rains.

Other kinds of tour: food, bus, bike and balloon

Each has its own guide in the "Guides on more Paris tours" list above.

  • Food: tasting walks in the Marais, Montmartre and Saint-Germain, or a class that teaches croissants and macarons.
  • Your own way: a hop-on hop-off bus lets you get off where you like. A guided bike ride covers more ground than a walk. A photoshoot gives you pictures of yourself at the Eiffel Tower.
  • Balloon: no balloon flies over Paris itself. The Ballon de Paris is tethered and rises 150 m on a cable. Real flights start in the countryside south of Paris.

Free walking tour or paid guide

A paid walk is the safer choice if you want a set price and free cancellation. The cheapest paid walk here costs from €15.

We did not check any free walking tour company, so we name none. If you join a free tour, ask before the start how payment works.

How many tours in how many days

One tour a day is plenty. It leaves time for the big sights you visit on your own.

  • 2 days: a Marais walk one morning and a night tour one evening.
  • 3 days: add a Père Lachaise walk on the third day.
  • 4 days or more: add a food tour or a cooking class.

Before you book a Paris tour

  1. Find the start the day before

Each listing shows the meeting point. Look it up on a map the day before, and plan to arrive 10 minutes early.

  2. Check the guide language

Most of our picks run in English. The 3-hour Père Lachaise tour lists French, so check its options first.

  3. Cancellation as shown

All seven picks have free cancellation on GetYourGuide. Read the exact cut-off time on the listing before you pay.

  4. Wear good shoes

The cemetery walks are on cobbled paths. Two of their listings say they do not suit wheelchair users.

Questions travellers ask before booking

What is the best tour to take in Paris?

For most visitors, the best tour is a guided walk of two to three hours. Père Lachaise cemetery and the Marais are good picks, from €15 to €30. In the evening, a private 2CV ride takes an hour, from €70.

Is 3 days enough to visit Paris?

Yes, 3 days is enough for the main sights. See the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre-Dame, and add one guided walk a day. Day trips such as Versailles need an extra day.

Do Paris walking tours run in the rain?

The Marais walk runs rain or shine, its listing says. The 2CV ride closes its roof if it rains. For other tours, check the weather rule on the listing.

How long is a Père Lachaise tour?

Two to three hours. The famous-graves walk and the haunted tour take 2 hours. The longer cemetery tour takes 3 hours.

Where is the best area to stay in Paris for sightseeing?

Stay near the Louvre and Opéra or in Le Marais. Both are central and close to many tour starts. Our guide Where to stay in Paris compares six areas.

Are free walking tours in Paris worth it?

They can be, but we did not check any free tour company. A paid walk gives you a set price and free cancellation, from €15 here. If you join a free tour, ask before the start how payment works.

How far ahead should I book a Paris tour?

Book as soon as your dates are set. All seven of our picks have free cancellation, so booking early costs nothing if your plans change. Check the cut-off time on the listing.
