The walk up to the abbey, and the crowds

The climb is steep, with many steps. The abbey says you need to be fit, and it is hard with limited mobility. Strollers must be folded.

From the car parks to the abbey entrance takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour on foot. Crowds make it slower.

The free Le Passeur shuttle covers the way from the car parks. It takes about 12 minutes and drops you 350 m from the ramparts. It runs from 7:30 am to midnight, so on your own you can come early or stay late.

On a tour, you go when the coach goes. For fewer people around you, pick the minivan trip with up to 8.

On your own: train or car

By train, take the TGV from Montparnasse to Rennes, about 2 hours. Then a bus takes about 1 h 10 min. In all, it is about 4.5 hours each way.

A direct NOMAD train to Pontorson runs on weekends all year and daily in summer. Pontorson is the nearest station, 9 km away. Bus line 2 takes about 27 minutes from there.

By car, it is 337 km via the A13 and A84. The car parks are 2.5 km from the Mont. Parking a car for up to 24 hours costs €14, €22 or €28 by season (2026 rates). From 6:30 pm to 3 am it is free, except in July and August.

Our Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by train guide shows the route step by step.
